History & Bios

Los Federales is a five-piece folk-fusion band from Portland, Maine. Starting in 2000 as an acoustic duo, the Feds have grown into a band that channels rock, reggae, funk, bluegrass, latin, and jazz music into an amalgamation we call "music for folks." Our songs are about love, life, death, and vegetables. The name "los federales" came about because Chris and Dana both lived on Federal Street in neighboring buildings. It is also lifted from the Townes Van Zandt song "Poncho and Lefty", and also because we are attempting to reclaim justice. Los Federales attempts to recreate our own music every time we play; we attempt to capture the instant in which we exist. We sing about life, lovers, war vegetables, and the cosmos. Drawing on the enormous body of music that exists, we attempt to recreate and recontextualize sounds from the past, to give them meaning and vitality in the present. Influences run from Dylan, the Dead, Zappa, Slash, Gregorian Monks, Townes, Soundgarden, John Hartford, Miles Davis, and many unnamed.
